The ground segment in the satellite communications industry consists of terminals (also referred to as antennas) communicating with the various satellite constellations howering in the sky, up to 36 000 km over our heads. These satellite terminals are quite different depending on where they are to be installed, who the user is and what satellite constellation that will be used.

Fixed and portable installations on the ground does not require advanced stabilization while installations for moving veicles and vessels at sea must be equipped with advanced stabililization functionality in order to always point accurately to the correct satellite. The technology supporting users while they are on the move is commonly referred to as Satcom on the Move (SOTM). The basic principle behind SOTM is that a vehicle equipped with a satellite antenna is able to establish communication via a satellite and maintain that communication while the vehicle is moving.
